Book Review: A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire #1)

Okay, so I know there’s not much stuff people don’t know about George R. R. Martin’s books, but it is just so great.

First published in 1996, A Game of Thrones has since become legendary when it comes to TV shows. The TV series is the most downloaded – not always legally – series of all time.

Aside from the show, the book itself – in my opinion – is better. The book is almost always better. The detail and description of the world is boundless and more intricate than the show could ever portray. George R. R. Martin’s Westeros is vast and fantastical, and although magic runs deep within its history, not many people believe or utilize magic.

We begin our journey of A Game of Thrones with the Night’s Watch and wights, dead people brought back by White Walkers, but they don’t call them White Walkers in the book, they call them the Others. Well, back to it, instead of just being killed off really fast like in the show, the brothers of the Night’s Watch actually fight. Though the powers of the Others bests them, and one brother lives by running away.

Then we see the brother who fled captured, about to undergo an execution from none other than Ned Stark. There, that example right there is flow of continuity. All the stories are connected in one way or another, and what is written is never useless. Every piece of this massive text is used.

The chapters are a bit unorthodox, instead of the usual “Chapter 1, 2, 3, ECT.” the chapters are given a characters name – for example Sansa, and that chapter will have the perspective and thoughts of Sansa Stark. This is cool and all, but when going back for references or to look up something, it makes it difficult. We have to go by page number instead. Even so, it’s smart and to the point, and I’m fine with that. And I also love that feeling when you reach that chapter with your favourite character – Arya, of course.

A Game of Thrones lacks some of the magical aspects of fantasy, but it makes up for it with politics. Before I continue, I must say I hate politics. It bores me. So when this book centres around politics of the throne, and keep me INTERESTED, you have to applaud that. It also seems I’m not the only one according to millions of people.

Overall, I think that character development drives a lot of the story, and I love that. Though sometimes, it can drag the plot advancement a bit. The land of Westeros is awesome – but still, I would not want to live there. And yay for dangerous politics.
