Movie Review: Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

Director: James Gunn

Comic Book Story Written by: Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning

Movie Adaptation Written by: James Gunn & Nicole Perlman

Starring: Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, and Vin Diesel

Guardians of the Galaxy is part of Marvel cinematic universe – phase 2; which started with Iron Man 3 (2013), and is finishing with the upcoming film Avengers: Age of Ultron, which is scheduled for release May 2015.

The story follows Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) as a young boy in the 1980’s listening to his mix tape, to his abduction, to time skipping forward 26 years, where he is now an outlaw who goes by the name Star Lord. As we leave a sad beginning, the mood changes as he starts dancing through some old ruins and sings; using hostile alien lizards as a faux-microphone. This is the first time we see the humour in the film, and I have to say, it’s great. They mix humour, seriousness, and action and a strange – yet satisfying – way, that doesn’t diminish from the story or made it discordant.

The meeting of the characters happened very quickly in funny chaos. Gamora (Zoe Saldana) tries to steal an orb that Peter himself stole, and friends Rocket and Groot are after the bounty on Peter’s head. A hilarious fight ensues with each party trying to gain or regain an item or person, and it ends with all of them incarcerated, where they meet the last member, Drax the Destroyer.

The dynamic the group has is absolutely wonderful; the charming rogue, the assassin who wants out, the the literal Drax, the foul-mouthed raccoon, and vocabulary-challenged Groot. Each of them are funny in their own way though their interactions are rough at first, they quickly form a true team.

What I didn’t like was how little character development there was for Ronan (Lee Pace). Sure, they kind of mentioned a history with his Father and Grandfather and the Xandarians, but I didn’t really understand why he was so outraged. In the end, though he was powerful, he seemed so petty. Also, I didn’t feel much connection between Gamora and Nebula (Karen Gillan), it was like they weren’t estranged pseudo-family at all.

Overall, the plot was good and well paced, but some of the enemy character development was a little lacking. The Guardians group was always fun and exciting to watch whether they were solo or duo or all together. The humour was fantastic, the fighting was nice, and Dancing Groot.
